RU Surgical Retina

The Vitreoretinal Surgery Operating Unit deals with the study and treatment of diseases affecting the retina, macula and vitreous body.

From a research point of view, the operating unit has ongoing studies on the pathogenesis, evolution and treatment of diseases affecting the retina and in particular the macular region. The instrumental equipment of the unit includes advanced instrumentation, including latest generation OCT angiography prototypes, used for the study of preclinical phenomena that may be at the origin of vitreoretinal skin diseases at the macular level.

The operating unit carries out research at the clinical trial centre in via Livenza 3 and clinical and surgical activities at the British Hospital's hospitalisation and care operating unit. The activity is characterised by a multidisciplinary approach to clinical research, making use of a collaboration between ophthalmologists, biologists and geneticists.

An outpatient clinic for vitreoretinal pathology in agreement with the National Health Service is active at the hospitalization and treatment operating unit of the British Hospital. Clinical and instrumental evaluation (OCT, angiographic and functional tests) can be performed at this facility. Vitrectomy, surgery for retinal detachment, peeling of macular membranes and surgery for macular holes are also carried out at this centre.

Objectives

Study of vitreo-retinal diseases through clinical and diagnostic-instrumental investigations. Evaluations of instrumentation, surgical techniques and laboratory investigations optimized for their care.
