Simple Operating Unit Anterior segment disorders, uveitis and ophthalmoplastic surgery 

Definition

The Anterior Segment of the eye includes the eyelids, conjunctiva, cornea, all the structures of the anterior chamber, and the lens.

The Anterior Segment Operating Unit is active at the Britannico Hospital under agreement with the National Health Service (SSN). It is dedicated to the diagnosis and treatment, both medical and surgical, of infectious, inflammatory, and degenerative diseases affecting the ocular surface, cornea, and lens.

Pathologies

The main pathologies treated at the operating unit include cataracts, keratoconus, corneal dystrophies, all corneal conditions leading to corneal transplantation, treatment of refractive errors (myopia, hyperopia, and astigmatism), and all orbital and eyelid pathologies.

Activities

Clinical Activities

The unit, coordinated by Dr. Domenico Schiano Lomoriello, conducts clinical and surgical activities at the inpatient and treatment unit of Britannico Hospital.

The unit is equipped with the most advanced diagnostic tools for the Anterior Segment of the eye, including:

  • Ocular aberrometry
  • Corneal aberrometry
  • Corneal topography
  • Corneal tomography
  • Pupillometry
  • Corneal pachymetry
  • Anterior segment OCT
  • Corneal endothelial microscopy
  • Corneal confocal microscopy
  • Corneal sensitivity analysis
  • Ocular biometry

This instrumentation allows the Operating Unit to remain at the forefront in the diagnosis and treatment of various ocular pathologies.

Surgical Activities

The following procedures are routinely performed:

  • Cataract surgery
  • Corneal surgery, including:
    • Full-thickness corneal transplants (PK)
    • Anterior lamellar keratoplasty (ALK and DALK)
    • Endothelial keratoplasty (DSAEK and DMEK)
    • Amniotic membrane grafting
